Notices & Policies

Our follows, subscriptions, reactions, replies, restacks, and links to other Substacks do not constitute unreserved endorsements of any other Substack account or of the opinions expressed by other Substack users.

Ads and Guiding Principles

To help offset the cost of providing most of our content for free, we are registered affiliates through Bookshop.org, Awin, ShareASale, and Amazon. If you make a purchase using the links, Brunette Gardens may earn a tiny commission, at no extra cost to you. We link to products we’ve purchased ourselves and personally vetted, and we favor quality items that match our values: good craftsmanship; small, independent businesses; conservation; and low-impact living. We also prefer items made in the USA, the more local to us in the Midwest, the better. Our writing is wholly independent, our views our own. We do not condone censorship and firmly believe in free-speech principles. No advertiser leverages influence on our expressions.

AI

We hope this is obvious when you read our work, but we have a strict, no-AI policy for all research, photography, and writing. Even our logo was designed by Lisa’s sister, Amy Barr, a human being and graphic designer. The only spot we’ve employed AI is in an experiment to see what kind of logo AI would design (the answer: it sucked). We think AI should be approached with great caution. However, we can’t control what AI resources Substack itself might use for its tools and features.

Giveaways

Outside of free review copies of newly published books, we do not receive anything in exchange for promoting giveaway items. This might change in the future, if a company we like and value wants to sponsor a giveaway, but we prefer to remain independent and will only work with people and products we admire and value.

Cookie Policy

Our affiliates might employ cookies to track purchases as part of our agreement with them. A cookie does not personally identify you; rather, it’s a way for companies to verify that you came to their site via the link here at Brunette Gardens.

Copyright

Brunette Gardens LLC owns all content published on this Substack blog and its email subscription list, exclusively.

Guest Authors

We sometimes publish the work of guest authors. While most of these people are writers we know, their posts commissioned by us, we have on occasion accepted outside submissions. The best way to begin the process is to first subscribe to Brunette Gardens to learn about our obsessions and flag our attention with your astute comments on our posts.

Please consult a medical or health professional if you have questions about your health. When working with herbs or preserving food, consult county, state, and federal health guidelines and seek confirmation in plant guides and other sources. If in doubt, throw it out.

Medical science is quickly evolving, with new discoveries and answers turning over established ideas all the time. Be persistent in your research, and question everything!

We are very concerned about data collection, censorship, and privacy, as well as the negative cultural and mental-health aspects of social media. We encourage you to keep up-to-date by subscribing to Brunette Gardens. You might also give Substack’s own Notes a whirl.
