Flowers, garlic and herbs are the only things we have room for in our small garden. As I’m getting older I feel both the heat and the cold more than ever, but thankfully our home is such that unless it is 38-40c we don’t need to have the air conditioning on. Heating is a but different, we have ours on 19c during the day and 21c at night, but don’t leave it in once retiring for the evening. Lights on only when necessary, and we are fortunate to have solar panels which have made a huge difference to our heating bills, even if the Government aren’t giving us as much back financially. We certainly create far more electricity than we use.

Sally, sounds like a great aging-in-place setup. Flowers, garlic, and herbs are all pretty useful and great to have in their own right. If you have a farmer's market where you can get reliably grown, local produce and animal products, you've got everything you need, right?

Lucky you on the A/C. We're already in the upper 90s (35-36 C), with high humidity. It's tough to eke it out when you work from home.

My husband has also suggested this very thing, as he works from home as well but believes we could improve the view, LOL!

So many times I have thought that certain methods recommended in permaculture make literally no sense in my climate (but would make a lot of sense in subtropical Australia.) It's great to read about someone else coming to the same conclusion. I'm really enjoying this series. Looking forward to the next installment.

Thank you, Lynn. Yeah, I appreciated Claire’s thoughts in particular on so many annual veg plants as first-succession flora that like lightly disturbed soil.

How many times over the past (fill in the blank) years have you wished you could quit your day job and live a simpler life? This couple managed a super-early retirement by recognizing what they could give up in terms of material comforts in order to gain so much more. Could you do something this bold? What are your limitations?
