By Lisa Brunette
As I announced on Notes, Sue Frause is our latest giveaway winner! See the below post for the details on this giveaway; Sue won a paperback copy of my poetry collection, Broom of Anger.
If you’re one of the 500+ subscribers who’ve followed us over from our early blog days on Typepad, you already know Sue. She was a three-time guest author of Brunette Gardens in those days. And if you’re here because we go way back to my tenure as a Seattle journalist, you might know Sue from her regular work as a writer for Crosscut, where I met Sue and served as her grateful editor.
If you miss Sue’s lively voice here at Brunette Gardens, the good news is we’re republishing her work here this week. So look for her articles on:
the origin of ‘Frause House’
a cute little outdoor cabana that got the Frauses through COVID lockdowns
And congratulations, Sue!
As a reminder, paid subscribers are eligible for our giveaways, which occur at least once per season, with bonus giveaways like this one throughout the year as well. Since we’re still in our first year here on Substack, with a small pool of paid subscribers, the likelihood of winning is high. Paid subscribers can make back their entire Brunette Gardens investment with one win.
Next week, I’ll announce our big summer giveaway: goat-milk soap products.
We’ve also begun a new program to regularly reward readers who share the Brunette Gardens love with their friends. You can win free paid subscriptions to this Substack (or extensions on your paid subscription) just by forwarding our emails on to others.
Sue and I had a great little conversation over email when I reached out to her about the win, and she shared with me the below photos she took of her enviable life on Whidbey Island, in the US Pacific Northwest. She’s since been living the glamorous life of the travel writer she is, with an itinerary that includes Jazz Port Townsend, an Amtrak trip past bucolic farmland and the Salish Sea to Vancouver, BC, and two weeks in Europe with the Rick Steves Tour, hitting Poland and Prague. She and her husband, AKA “Farmer Bob,” are celebrating their forty-ninth (!) wedding anniversary.
Join me in congratulating Sue Frause on her win (and the longevity of her marriage!), check out her fun posts upcoming this week, and for now, enjoy her scenes from life on Whidbey Island. As many of you know, I lived in the Pacific Northwest for 15 years. I actually miss Whidbey more than I miss Seattle; it’s one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
